I am from a Great Southern Land. I am from the Southern Cross and a blazing Milky Way. I am from brilliant blue skies and a light so bright that it hurts your eyes. I am from a dry hot day with the tang of burning eucalyptus in the air, and the pall of white [...]

The immigrant experience
Posted in Civil Liberties, Life, Parenting on 20 February, 2007 | 7 Comments »
I’m a pretty typical and untypical Sydneysider – I was born overseas (31% of Sydneysiders were) but I have lived here since I was 4 (many Sydneysiders, if they were born in Australia, came here from somewhere else).
I think of myself as Australian, but my parents think of themselves as New Zealanders, even though they’ve both [...]
Outcomes based education

John Howard had a column recently in the SMH about education. It was mostly a rant about the way education works these days -
“Many of the fads and politically correct fashions that have found their way into our schools undermine the quality of education. Where Big Brother or a text message jostles with Shakespeare and classical literature [...]
Email damage

A few years ago, I used to have a colleague who travelled a lot. He was notorious for emails written at 3 am from some airport lounge ripping into someone who had made a mistake (even if only in his eyes when considered at 3 am). He copied people in, too, so even when they [...]
Rain at last

Today and last night, it poured with rain in Sydney. It was the first time I can remember that nobody complained. Even us Sydneysiders, cityslickers who don’t care two hoots about the farmers, have started to miss the rain.
Of course, it’s partly that our water supply is at a record low. We’re nothing, if not [...]
Breathtaking hypocrisy

As I was reading the Financial Review this morning, this quote caught my eye:
“The Howard government has raised the art of hypocrisy to levels not previously seen by mankind, but …. to actually block the [Qantas] takeover would be breathtakingly bad policy, politics and plain dumb.”
I haven’t really been following what’s happening with Qantas, but [...]
Dance shoes
Posted in Blogging on 7 February, 2007 | 3 Comments »
On Jo(e)’s advice, I went out and bought some dance shoes to wear with skirts at work. It’s a fantastic idea! The shoes are incredibly soft leather, and while they’re still not quite as comfortable as (say) trainers would be, they are the most comfortable of this type of shoe that I’ve ever had.
I was [...]
Longevity risk – is it insurable?
Posted in Economics on 1 February, 2007 | 3 Comments »
Longevity risk is the risk that you live too long. Not a problem, most people would think. But there’s a financial risk – if you live longer than the money you have saved during your lifetime will last. Most actuaries fervently believe that this a risk that you should insure against. But very few people [...]
